45
species and subspecies of Orchids are growing in Cyprus withabout
30 species for Northern Cyprus only. half of which are Ophrys. Populations
can be numerous and are mostly found on the Pentadactylon slopes.
Serapias can also be found in seasides scrubs, at least along the
Karpaz Peninsula. By the end of March, some orchids were allready
fructifying.
A few years ago, there was a huge fire destroying forest along the
Pentadactylon range. During the following years, a great number
of Orchids bloomed. They benefited from ashed and the lack of competition.
Whether the tubers were dormant or the seedling flourishing is yet
unclear; but such phenomenon is obvious and happens in other biodomes
rich in tuberous Orchids and with fires such as South Africa.
