Most of the seaside is still wild
and unspoiled, a rare situation along mediterranean coasts. The
Northern coast is mostly rocky, while the east coast up to the
Karpaz is mostly sandy, with long beaches. Karpaz beaches are
famous, being among the last where sea-turtles are laying their eggs
along the med coast. Some Seaside landscapes exist around Famagouste
and Salamis at least. An australian Acacia (Acacia cyanophylla) with
long greyish leaves and yellow flowers was planted there. It helps
stabilizing this area by it suckers and seedlings. This shrub (or
small tree) is used in other types of shallow soil or very dry area
in Cyprus. Sometimes pines scrubs occur beneath the Seaside. You can
find a number of "casual" sandy seaside area there : Limonium sp. ,
Mathiola sp., Pancratium maritimum Sand-Lily", Urginea maritima with
huge leaves in spring and long spikes in summer, Lycium
ferocissimum, introduced from sout-africa with orange round berries,
Helianthemum obtusifolium an endemic rockrose, one or two stemless
Centaurea sp. , a small blue annual linum and at least three
halophytic shrubs with more or less succulent leaves.
