White spikes Asphodelus are
everywhere, this plant is typical of overbrowsed med landscape.
Young spikes can be eaten as asparagus, but you can't call it a
delight. Tubers are Dahlia-like and edible when boiled, but being
very fibrous they were only used during starvation periods. I also
find an Asphodeline sp.in the Karpaz scrubs. Asphodeline have long
leafy stems finished with a spike of yellow stary flowers. Two sp.
are mentionned : A. lutea which is quite common in the eastern side
of Med. area, from Liguria to Central Asia; and A. brevicaulis ;
Both sp. are said to be quite localised in N.
Cyprus.
